Earth Day is officially celebrated throughout the world on 22 April each year, with some large-scale or multi-day events often being organized over the weekend either before or after 22 April. A number of communities incorporate Earth Day into either an Earth Week, or an Earth Month, with a series of activities promoting environmental awareness taking place over this period.
So Much to Discover at the Royal Ontario Museum
The concept for the Royal Ontario Museum was born in the twentieth century by a handful of influential people in Toronto. This eager group encouraged the University of Toronto and the Government to sign the ROM Act on 16 April 1912, and the opening of the museum took place on 19 March 1914. Since that first day, the majestic museum has been a monument viewed with pride by every Toronto local.
Spend a Day at Singapore Zoo
Covering 28 hectares of land, the Singapore Zoo is managed by Wildlife Reserves Singapore. With more than 300 species of animals, the Singapore Zoo welcomes 1.4 million visitors each year. Right from its opening in June 1973, the Singapore Zoo has followed the “open zoo” concept where animals are housed in spacious, landscaped enclosures simulating their natural habitats. Barriers are concealed in vegetation to promote a feeling of openness while ensuring that visitors to the zoo are completely safe.
Tin Hau Festival – Honoring the Goddess of the Sea
Although there are many legends and tales regarding the origins of Tin Hau, the Goddess of the Sea, it is generally accepted that she was born in the year 1098 AD into the Sung Dynasty. It is said that she was named Mo Niang and lived in the Pu Tien fishing village where she used her special abilities to predict weather conditions, keeping the sailors safe. Some say, Mo Niang could walk across water if given a straw mat and others say that she stood on the shore, during good and bad weather, to guide the boats home. Today, it is believed that she watches over fishermen and sailors, warding off illness and filling their nets with fish.
