Adventure Awaits in Santa Cruz

It is known that the Tehuelches populated the Santa Cruz province in Argentina long before the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan in 1520. Santa Cruz has become a popular tourist destination because of its magnificent natural splendor and attractions through out the province. Every town and city, including the capital city Rio Gallegos, is filled with new adventures and wonderful historical sights waiting to be discovered.

As with all of Argentina, the Santa Cruz province enjoys a moderate climate. One of the province’s most visited attractions is the Los Glaciares National Park or Glaciers National Park. It was opened in the year 1937 and its 600 thousand hectares of land is famous for some of the world’s most breathtaking glaciers, of which the Perito Moreno Glacier is probably the best known of all. In 1981, the park was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, confirming that the beauty and magnificence of this park is worth the visit. Visitors should ensure that they view the stunning Lago Argentino Lake in the park, as many endangered species and birds can be seen around the lake and in the park.

Another noteworthy site in Santa Cruz is the Gobernador Gregores Museum. It was home to the legendary Lieutenant Juan Manuel Gregores and was inaugurated as a museum on 1 October 1993. The museum consists of a kitchen, bathroom, dining room, office and bedroom that contain original pieces of furniture, documents and photographs.

Estancia Cristina is a historical sheep farm that provides visitors with breathtaking views of the Upsala Glacier and the opportunity to experience the inner workings of the traditional farming methods of the time. The petrified forests, Bosques Petrificados National Monument, is a spectacular attraction, as are the Walichu Caves near El Calafate, where visitors can marvel at the rock paintings that have been determined to originate from the Paleolithic age. The region surrounding El Calafate, in particular near the El Chalten village, is a popular hiking destination. Mount Fitz Roy, the Viedma Glacier and the Cerro Torre provide nature enthusiasts with a variety of hiking and trekking trails and routes.

Santa Cruz is a destination in Argentina that is filled with majestic masterpieces of nature and fascinating historical sites. Many undiscovered and untouched areas lie waiting for exploration by the adventurous and welcome visitors with the warmth of its beauty.
