Melbourne - The Charm and Grace
There is a lot about Melbourne Australia that is reminiscent of New England. One could even extend that and say that it is the most English town in Australia. In a particularly laidback, and generally charming, country, Melbourne with its Victorian and Gothic architecture is of full of old world charm and grace.
The weather too is as unpredictable as English weather and is believed to change five times a day. The popular saying among die-hard citizens of Melbourne goes 'If you don't like the weather, come back after fifteen minutes!’
A wide spread city, the downtown section of Melbourne is distinctly outlined by the route of the famous red City Circle Tram, which you can ride for free. The Colonial Tramcar Restaurant is another fun way of seeing the city on an old refurbished tram while enjoying excellent food and wine.
The Yarra River runs gently through the city and across the river is a perennial street party. Jugglers, singers and musicians all entertain passersby with their performances on most evenings. The area in fact developed later into an entertainment center with the casino and other attractions. The outstanding Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens run along the Yarra opposite the city and one can spend a whole day here and still not have seen it all. The Shrine of Remembrance is well worth a visit too.
A trip that is the highlight of a visit to Melbourne is an afternoon at Phillip Island. A package tour will take you out to the Summerland beach and you make yourself comfortable in an amphitheater like setting. Just as you are snuggling within your blanket against the nippy wind from the sea as dusk sets in, you are greeted by one of the most amazing sights in the world. Hundreds, no thousands, of fairy penguins suddenly appear from the waters and head towards the coast. The sight of hordes of these tiny creatures, waddling like only penguins can, heading home at night to their nests after a day of foraging on the waters is a sight which will linger as a unique memory of Melbourne.
