Symphony of Lights – Hong Kong

Listed by the renowned Guinness World Records as the “World’s Largest Permanent Light and Sound Show”, the “Symphony of Lights” is a multimedia celebration of the spirit, energy and diversity of Hong Kong. This spectacle of colored lights, searchlights and laser beams, which is synchronized to music and narrated, embraces five main themes – Awakening, Heritage, Energy, Partnership and Celebration.

Every night at 8pm a total of 44 high-rise buildings on either side of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor participate in the Symphony of Lights, which spectators can view from a number of suggested vantage points, including from ferries and cruise boats on the harbor waters. The show follows a sequence that leads from one theme into the next, starting with Awakening and ending with Celebration.

Awakening symbolizes the beginning and dynamic growth of Hong Kong with flashes of laser lights that progressively illuminate all 44 buildings with an array of dancing lights in all the colors of the rainbow. Where Awakening ends, Energy begins with a display of rising color patterns that give way to sweeping lasers and searchlights crisscrossing the night sky to signify the vibrant energy of this mega-city. Encompassing what are viewed as traditional lucky colors, Heritage features red and gold shining across buildings on both sides of the harbor, while traditional Chinese music is played to symbolize Hong Kong’s colorful heritage, as well as its rich cultural traditions.

In a magnificent display symbolizing unity, Partnership features a series of laser beams and searchlights scanning across the harbor from one side, reaching out to meet and cross the laser beams and searchlights scanning across the harbor from the opposite side. The exciting finale, Celebration, is a powerful kaleidoscopic display of rhythmic, swirling beams dancing energetically across the harbor to signify the close partnership which exists between the two sides of the harbor – Hong Kong and Kowloon - as well as representing an even brighter future.

The music and narration of the Symphony of Lights is broadcast along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, as well as the promenade at Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai. Spectators can also tune in to various frequencies on their radios, which broadcast in English, Cantonese and Putonghua, or dial in on their mobile phones for the soundtrack.

On special occasions and festive days, stunning pyrotechnic displays are launched from the middle of the harbor to make an already exceptional display even more sparkling. If you have the opportunity to visit the bustling city of Hong Kong, be sure to take time out to enjoy the Symphony of Lights – it is certainly a sight worth seeing.
