New Zealand’s Black Abyss

New Zealand truly is a place with something for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you prefer beaches or forests, plants or animals, this country has it all. What’s more, there is even an array of activities that will keep you busy from the day you arrive to the day you leave. The Black Abyss tour is just one example of the fantastic activities available.

Located in Waitomo, New Zealand, the Black Abyss tour is designed to cater for people with a moderate level of fitness. The tour takes roughly five hours and requires participants to expend themselves physically as they make their way into the caves, enjoy a light snack and then enjoy an exhilarating underground adventure. The tour starts above the Black Abyss where guests are carefully put into safety harnesses which are tightened and checked as the technique of abseiling (rappelling) is explained to them. Then it is time to clamber over the edge of this magnificent limestone cave and push off into the darkness.

Once you have descended it seems as if your never-ending goal is to find daylight once more. Your adrenaline will pump through your veins as you climb, slide and squeeze your way through the cave system before boarding a ‘black water tube’ and entering the icy cold black waters of the cave. Your final ascent is up the side of a spectacular underground waterfall – an experience not easily forgotten. Once you are back on the surface you get to enjoy a warm shower and a great snack at the Black Water Head Quarters, followed by a free tour of the beautiful Waitomo Cave Museum.

Each group is guided by a professional and fully qualified guide who will be able to not only help you with the physical aspect of the tour but also give you an abundance of information on the various stalagmites and stalactites as well as the glow worms and other creatures which live in the cave. Groups are kept small for a more personalized and safer experience and safety is given top priority. All equipment, such as tubes, wetsuits, helmets, boots, abseiling equipment and other safety devices are provided by the tour company though it is advisable that you bring your own costume and towel. Each participant must be reasonably fit, be over sixteen years of age and weigh at least 45 kilograms.

The adventure appeals to all your senses and combines elements of relative danger with natural beauty, physical challenges and the fear of the unseen. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable adventure tour!
