Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay
No-one would ever expect to see sharks, giant rays or moon jellies in the desert. Neither would anyone think that it is possible to have an entire underwater world amidst the glamour, lights and casinos of Las Vegas. But at Mandalay Bay visitors will find just that. Shark Reef, or Shark Reef Aquarium as it is now called, opened its doors to the public in 2000, made it possible for them to get close to a vast range of ocean creatures that many have only seen on television or in books. Not only is this magnificent attraction in Las Vegas a breathtaking sight to behold, but it’s an interactive, educational adventure for the entire family.
Shark Reef Aquarium is the only attraction in all of North America where visitors will find only predators, in all shapes and sizes. It is also the only establishment in the entire Nevada region that has been accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association. With the assistance and guidance of the Vancouver Aquarium, the Shark Reef Aquarium has grown into a fully functional sanctuary for ocean predators, in the middle of the Nevada desert.
Visitors to Shark Reef can look forward to seeing the extremely rare golden crocodiles, piranhas, sawfish, green sea turtles, stingrays, eels, jellyfish, exotic fish, reptiles and a hundred different shark species, including blue sharks and hammerheads. With more than two thousand animals housed in 1.6 million gallons of seawater, Shark Reef is truly an amazing sight. Visitors are also able to go on a Behind the Scenes tour, where guides will educate them on all the responsibilities and daily duties that the staff need to care for to ensure that the health of all the animals is looked after. Touch tanks, interactive displays and smaller exhibits are enjoyed by both adults and children, and are a wonderful opportunity for parents and children to explore, discover and learn together.
Shark Reef Aquarium hopes to promote the importance of conservation and the preservation of natural resources. It is dedicated to educating the public while providing them with a breathtaking experience and giving the animals in their aquarium the best care possible. But first and foremost, the facility is committed to the conservation of its animals and research into the protection of endangered species.
