Travel to Koge in Denmark

Enjoy the lovely atmosphere of Koge

Just south of Copenhagen you will come across the old port of Køge, now a lovely city with excellent industry. Køge was most likely established due to the extensive fishing trade potential especially of herring. It was officially recognized as a town in 1288. Woodcarvers, shoemakers and goldsmiths also took up residence in Køge. During the 17th century wars, Køge was badly affected. Niels Juel, a Dane, successfully took on the Swedish fleet in 1677. Things started looking up for Køge in the 1800s.

A 9m granite monument entitled "Battle in Køge Bay" near the harbor commemorates the naval heroes Niels Juel and Ivar Huitfeldt. Ivar Huitfeldt was the commander of the "Danebrog". The ship was attacked in 1710 and caught alight, despite this, Huitfeldt fought until the ship exploded.

Whilst strolling through Køge's historic center you will be surrounded by lovely wooden houses from the 16th and 17th centuries. In Store Kirkestræde you will come across the oldest building from 1527. Torvet, the marketplace, has an infamous past. Witch trials were conducted here in 1612 and no less than 15 were burned on the stake. Today a lively market is held here on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

You will find St Nicholas' Church fascinating. Constructed between 1450 and 1500, the interior contains an altar piece, a pulpit, choir gallery and the tombs of Køge's merchants. Pay a visit to Køge Municipal Museum. Displays include traditional costumes, old furniture, agricultural implements and so on.

The 41m high white crag is a stunning sight to see. Upon it you will discover a church from 1357. Legend has it that the church was built by a fisherman saved at sea. Because the sea is slowly eroding the cliffs of chalk, the legend states that each New Year's eve the church moves slightly back to prevent itself from falling into the sea.

Køge also has much to offer in the line of modern conveniences. Enjoy a sumptuous meal at one of the lovely restaurants, or do a bit of shopping in town. Your travel agent will be able to organize a flight to Køge for you. You may find some really great deals for Køge flights online.

The captivating city of Køge is a holiday destination you will never forget.
