Question

This may seem a strange request.

My parents run a hotel in the UK and had some Swedish guests staying there for one day. The Swedish guests did not speak any English so communicating was a bit difficult especially at meal times.

My father asked one of the swedish children if she wanted some "squash" - which is an english slang word for a drink of cordial / pop / juice (normally orange).

When asked this the little girl started to cry and almost got frightened. This lead me to wonder what does the english word squash sound like in swedish and does that sound = a swedish word?

any ideas? squash in english is phonetically pronounced (skwôsh)

thanks tony UK

I heard the call..

I can only think of two Swedish words here, that sounds like that: 1) "squash" wich is a sort of pumpkin and 2) "squash" that is a bollsport. But I believe these words mean the same in English to!?

Nothing to be afraid of, though.

/David

Hmmm

Petabyte had answered, but his post disappeared.

I didn't answer it on purpose in case there was some little slang thing there I never heard of up here in the sticks.

From a linguistic pedant!

H-m-m-m-m . . . . could "squash" possibly have been misheard as "slås" ??

Terror understandable if the little girl thought she was being asked if she'd like to be 'beaten up'

I and we have already answered this question before.

hnn... I don't really think it would be a missunderstanding, rather that she was afraid of your dad. I know _I_ would have cried if an adult talked to me in a foreign language ^_^...
