In the worst, attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor, three hijacked planes slammed into the Pentagon and New York's landmark World, Trade Center on Tuesday, demolishing the two 110-story towers, that symbolise U.S. financial might.

Key landmarks like the White House, the fire-damaged Pentagon, the Sears Tower in Chicago, the CIA building in Washington and the Walt Disney theme parks on both coasts were ordered evacuated and closed until further notice.

No death toll was immediately released but officials feared the number of victims could climb into the thousands - possibly the tens of thousands - as 40,000 people alone worked in the soaring steel and glass Trade Center towers.

It was the worst attack on American soil since Japanese war planes bombed the U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, killing 2,280 soldiers and 68 civilians and forcing the United States into World War Two.

A friend on a seperate board in the states has advised they are on Defcon 2. This is major stuff...

Unhappy United States

Being a New Zealander residing in the United States for the past 18 years I am of course familiar with the common attitude and discrimination that is apparent in this country. However, there has been an incredible revelation in this country since this horrific event. Black, White, Asian, Hispanic..all nationalities in this melting pot have come together and a new found spirituality has arisen - I have always maintained by sincere loyalty towards New Zealand..but now in the hour of uncertainty I stand side by side with the citizens of this country and for the first time respect the strength, determination and spirit of the people of this country.

CNN which has coverage of the rescue operation maintains up to date current progress (if any)constantly. I myself, living in Los Angeles had scheduled a trip during this month to New York to visit a friend in Manhatten - thankfully I had postponed it, however, the friend I was to visit has a brother in the CIA in Washington and he has contacted me frequently discussing what the FBI and related agencies have found in respect to the terrorists, (information non-harmful to the public) this to my amazement has been subsequently reported on the news stations.

We are determined in this country to once again resume a "normal" existence and trust in President Bush and the armed forces.

Go Kiwigal

We at home are hoping and wishing you well!

I think others worldwide share the sentiment of coming together, although being in any of the countries involved would be quite freaky...

Be Safe.

Wink

Thanks for the good wishes. It is a little strange and unnerving over here in Boston, with a lot of armored vehicles driving around, jets patrolling overhead, and constant coverage of the impending "war" on television.
I depart Oct 6th from here to Los Angeles to Auckland. Looking forward to some whitebait, and some rest in the wilds of the West Coast.I am staying home a month.
(One Kiwi who works as a Coast Guard, was asked if he was worried NZ would ever be attacked by terrorists..he said they'd have to find it first.)

America underattack

What happend on that dreadful day, will always be marked in history as a direct strike to liberty, democracy, and the land of the free, at the cost of countless lifes both in America and Afghanistan.

What happend was EVIL to say the least, but >>>>>>>>>>
Were the americans asking for it??? >>>>>>>>>>>>>
American meddling and atrocities are many and gruesome,

Vietnam is an example, where AGENT ORANGE killed, mamed, and injured not only countless innocent Vietnamees but also kiwi, aussie and american soldiers payed aswell in birth deformities, illness and cancer (my uncle payed this price with his life leaving a wife and three children behind). The Atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki where over half a million people (innocent children, students, workers etc) where injured and killed by the bomb and its radiation. What about Pearl Harbour you say!!!, most people dont no that America was supplying China with aid, the Japanese warned America off, and warned them of the attack of War on Pearl Harbour. Roosevelt was pro war but the public and congress was very much anti WW2 and did everything to avoid it. US intelligence (well document) denied passing on info to Hawaii about the japanese attack, this was Roosevelts back door into the war against Hitler.
American indirect involvement in many wars and uprisings in the world have killed more people than the sept 11th attack. What made Sept 11th more horrific was the fact that cameras saw the whole thing, but in Peru, Cuba and other countries where America has meddeld in, no cameras where there to beam pictures into our living rooms on the 6:00 news.
So as you can see America and Bin Ladin are not so different. The only difference is Bin laden kills in the name of Allah and Americans kill in the name of "Liberty". God Bless America!!!!, Both have blood on their hands

even though i do not regard past American actions in high regard, lets not place the tragedy of the 11th any higher or lower than the tragedies we'd rather forget. ''

Afghanistan has suffered far worse than America, but no one wants to say it

As an American who has lived in both the US and New Zealand, I appreciate all of the world's support for what happened here on September 11th. I want to respond to those who say that the US deserved what we got (the previous post). The US isn't perfect, but it is simply wrong and immoral to say that 3,000 innocent people deserved to die. Most of those are hard-working people who have families who care about them. If you have a problem with the US government, that is one thing; but do not take that anger and channel it at innocent people (that's what the terrorists did). America should learn from this and we should improve ourselves in response to this, but wherever innocent life is lost, the world should mourn and pray, no matter if it is an American, an Afghan, an Israeli, or a New Zealander.
