Aussie company reinvents roaming without roaming charges

Cellular Roaming Alliance of Melbourne has developed a roaming system that does away with roaming charges.

It's called ZEBRA Roaming and works with GSM and other wireless standards. An overseas visitor is assigned an instant temporary account and local phone number over the air and local call charges apply. Various announcement, message and call forwarding options allow to stay in touch with visitors via their home country mobile number.

Still, network operators need to sign up with ZEBRA before conumers can benefit from the new system. A project to deploy the system in Japan is under way.
