During the Battle of the Bulge in late 1944 there were many acts of bravery and compassion on the part of the soldiers trying to defend Bastogne. I believe my father, who was killed during the battle and is buried in Henri-Chapelle, might have been involved in one such act. We have been led to believe through letters that were delivered to my mother that my father helped save at least three children who were under enemy fire while they sought safety in either a church or some other building. I am in hopes that someone who reads this might have some knowledge of this.
As it was told to us, my father knew the children were in harms way and he went to the building and brought out the children - one under each arm and one piggy-back.
I realize that it took place over 50 years ago, but perhaps someone remembers the event, or even was one of the children involved. My sister and I would be greatful
to hear from anyone who might be able to help us in our search for information.
Thank you.
