My name is Richard Georgel and I would like to know if there is anyway you could help me find
out what happened to my great-grandfather Francois Antoine Joseph Georgel in Belgium? My great-grandmother Marie Philomene Macaux came to America with her son Emile Georgel my grandfather
aboard the ship Westernland and landed at the port of New York on March 22, 1884 Leaving her
husband Francois Antoine Joseph Georgel in Beglium.
Sometime between the dates of October 17, 1881 the marraige date at Namur, and March 22, 1884 the United States arrival date. Francois Antoine Joseph Georgel committed a crime in Belgium. I assume he was in jail in Belgium reason unknown as a couple of pieces of information I have received point to this.
1st. I have a record from the Catholic Church at Bay Settlement, Wisconsin stating to the priest that
Marie Philomene Macaux has a husband still living in Belgium.
2nd. There is a note from a niece before she died stating what she remembered the story about Joseph Brice and Marie Macaux. The note says Marie Macaux had a husband living in Belgium and could not marry Joseph Brice. So with the help of Octavian Brice the Belgium Counsel General they wrote to Belgium and found this Francois Antoine Joseph Georgel in jail and sent divorce papers.
I would like to know what happened to my great-grandfather Francois Antoine Joseph Georgel.
What crime did he commit that kept him in jail so long?
I am planning a trip to Belgium and am going to visit the birth towns of Namur, and Meux of my ancestors
and also the place where my great-grandfather died at Tournai, Belgium.
Any information will be greatly appreciated, I do not know where to go from here if you do not help me.
I am very proud of my Belgian heritage and just want to know what happened to him. I know he died at an
at a Lunatic Asylum at Tournai, Belgium on November 15,1926
Again my questions will be what crime did commit? And why did he die at Tournai, Asylum? I would be
indebted to you to know these answers.
My great-grandfather Francois Antoine Joseph Georgel born December 19, 1856 at Namur, Belgium.
His parents were Antoine Georgel and Catherine Delsaux.
He married Marie Philomene Macaux October 17, 1881 at Namur, Belgium
He died November 15,1926 at Tournai, Belgium.
Thank you for any considerations given,
Richard Georgel.
I am sending along a copy of the death certificate in hopes it might be of help in a different email, because I do not know how to send the two at one time. Someone along time ago sent my family a picture of an institution at Tournai,Belgium and said my Great-grandfathers grave was there and a cross that bears his name is still on the grounds somewhere along a back wall or fence. They also said he was buried in common ground and the grave was used for someone else years later. I do have a picture of that also and will send that along.
Thank you again for any considerations given.
Richard Georgel

Belgians in Wisconsin

Thank you for you posting, Richard. I was searching for ancestry on my wife's side (Teresa Brice)for our sons, and through your post found her great grandfather Octavian Brice who was the Belgian Counsel General in Wisconsin. Glad to hear he helped your ancestors get married! Is there any more you might know about Octavian's ancestry in Belgium, as our trail back in time goes no further than Wisconsin.

We live in Minneapolis, Minnesota, so can visit the Green Bay area of Wisconsin some upcoming holiday and do research for you, if you would like.

It's a small world.

Hello,

You may want to contact the city hall in Tournais for the death certificat. If you know were he was jailed it would help finding out what was the crime he was acused of. I am from Dinant, about 30 miles South of Namur. I am now in Mass.
Good luck. Jeanine honeyb9711@aol.com
