Hi. I am trying to locate relatives in Sweden. My Grandfather came to the USA from Sweden around 1920-1923. His name is Gustav Alrik Anderson. His Fathers name is Otto, and his Mothers name is Amanda (Swanson) Anderson. There were 8 children in this family. John, Axel, Fridoff, Gustav, Bernhard, Ruben, Harold, and Signe. His Father Otto had 3 siblings, Pierre, Frans, and an un named sister. Gustav's Mother Amanda had 2 siblings, a brother and sister both un named.
Gustav married Minnie Smith in 1931.
Thanx for any information you can send my way
Andra

Smile Re: Andersen

Hello, I don't know if i can help you much, those are some interesting family names though, one of my family names is Anderson/Andersen..not sure how to spell it though. They either were from Sweden and still living their at time of marraige or had already moved to Canada in and around..the mid 1800's I believe. Some of my family names are : Anderson, Peterson, Selma Hammer, and Berg. There is a town called Ericsville or something with a family musium. He was a brother or something of one of my great/great-great grandfathers. That is all I can think of at the moment as I don't have my book with me. We are prob. distantly related, though at a distance Good luck with your search

Smile ThankYou for the replies..

Happy Holidays!!
My grandfather was born 11.11.1895, in Gullabo?
I have only been able to find him in the SS death index? This is all so confusing to me to search, but would LOVE to have contact with those whom I am related to, so it is worth the search.I have sent a few letters to address there, and one was returned, since that persoon had passed on. The other letter never came back, yet no reply either
Not sure where to go from here.
Thanx so much for your replies. I truly appreciate it.
Wishing you a safe and happy holiday season.
Andra

Anderson spellings

Typically Andersson would be Swedish

Anderson is often Scottish ( from the Norse settled areas)or can be Norwegian

Andersen would be either Norwegian or Danish

Simply the name means that you are a son of an Anders

Prior to the 1900's girls would be Andersdotter (Swedish) or Andersdatter (Norwegian)

Therefore the name is found throughout Scandinavia and Northern Scotland.

To really trace relatives with this name you need a location in Europe to work with.

Gullabo Ancesters

Andra,

I saw your inquiry about your Swedish ancestors on the Sweden.com community web site and may have some helpful suggestions for you. My grand parents came from Gullabo Parish as well.

The Family History Library operated by the Mormon Church in Salt Lake City has microfilm copies of Swedish Parrish Records and Clerical Surveys (like a census). The church has established Family History Centers across the country where you can have the appropriate film sent and you can then review it. The services of the FHC and FHL are free and anyone can use them. They only charge a small fee for sending the films. I am not Mormon and use the FHC all the time for my research. They are very helpful there.

You can learn all about this at http://www.familysearch.org. You can find the film numbers in their catalog by searching on "Gullabo > Kalmar > Sweden". If that is a problem search by film number, 139166. That is a film for Torsas that I used and will get you to the right part of the catalog. Gullabo records were under Torsas prior to 1871.

You can also download a pamphlet about doing Swedish research from the web site. I recommwnd you read it before ordering films

Good luck
