i come from a line or two of Lofgren's, and my middle name is now Lofgren, and i have been told it was some sort of a given name. i would love to know what it means, and to know whether there is anyone else with this name. also, it was at one point Lofgreen, but i think that was taken to try and seem more american, but if that has any significance, i would love to hear it, thank you all.

Lofgren is actually a last name. Lövgren or löfgren and it means leafstick.

thank you. i know it is a last name, it is my grandfathers last name, and my mothers maiden name. i was given it as a middle name, because my fathers last name (and mine), is Smith. is there any significance to "leafstick"?
thanks again |

Lofgren is just a lastname. It has a meaning (leafstick) put it is not a word that is used in any daily conversations (except to get mr Lofgren´s attention!). It is, to be honest, quite weird as a middle name. I am quite sure that it would not be accepted by the Swedish agencies as a middle name.
Don´t feel sorry of that, it sounds quite cool as a middle name (even if it would sound quite weird IN Sweden). Since you are not living in Sweden it doesn´t matter that much. Take pride in that you are keeping your past in the present! In the early 20th century the tradition of ”son”-names was freezed, which means that the last name was not inherited and derived from the father (i.e, the son of a guy named Lars, would be given the last name Larsson) automatically. As a consequence of this, the government promoted Swedes to change the very common “son”-names to own names. One of the demands, however, was that the names should “feel” Swedish. Names typical for things in nature, such as Björk (Birch), Lind, Blom, Skog (Wood), kvist – and Löfgren – became popular at this time. family of Johanson in Goteborg
This reply form may not be the place to start, but it is the first place I saw "post". I am looking for relatives of Bertil Charles Johanson, dob-24 of July, 1912, Goteborg. He came to USA early in the 1940's and was Naturalized in 1945. He lived in New York. I heard that a sister was in New York looking for him in the 70's. Thank you. Johanson
