Hi Fluffyduck
I'm John Rolt living in London. There are 12 other Rolts listed in the London phone directory (probably several more who are unlisted). My sister lost her 'Rolt' when she married a Kiwi (now lives in Christchurch). I'm interested in Rolt family history and have quite a lot of detail on file so I'd be happy to compare notes. My own 'Rolt' history goes back 5 generations but I also have a list of all Rolt BDMs (births, deaths and marriages) in UK from 1837 to about 1900 - about 600 references. Notable Rolts have included Tony Rolt (racing driver for Connaught and Jaguar in the 50's - see http://www.formulaone.fsnet.co.uk/1950.htm); LTC "Tom" Rolt, author, railways and industrial archaeology enthusiast; Major General Sir John Rolt (knighted c. 1860) who wrote 'Rolt on Command'; Sir John Rolt (my GGGF), Attorney General c.1860. I understand that the name is recognised in the Domesday Book which William the Conqueror had compiled here in 1066 - 1088 and that the name is originally Norse - many Rolts are in the East Anglia part of England where Norse invaders would have settled. I look forward to hearing from you - regards, John R. |

General Sir John Rolt
I have just come upon the note from John Rolt of London, posted in March 2001.
I have identified a Rolt in my family tree but the facts are somewhat different. He is Lieutenant General Sir John Rolt K.C.B. He had two daughters, Jane and Ann. Ann died young of measles. Jane was married in 1805 in Cork Ireland and died in 1880. His two sons were Henry George, born 1826 and a Church of England Cleric, and Thomas Francis who was in the Coldstream Guards and married twice. I would appreciate hearing from the contemprary John or any others who may be able to provide further links and/or exchange information |

Hi Searcher
That was my post - I think your General Sir John is the same notable officer I referred to (different rank) as the author of 'Rolt on command' in my earlier post. I would be happy to compare notes though I believe your man was from the Irish Rolt side? I don't know of a connection with our own family. Please contact me on john.rolt@ukonline.co.uk or phone +44 (0)20 8994 7488. Regards John Rolt London |

My mother's maiden name was Rolt and she had 1 brother and 3 sister's who all presently live in Ireland. I don't know that much about my mothers parents as they had passed before I was born. I always believed that I was full irish until I found out that my grandfather came from England. Our family moved to the United States in the early 80's and my mother passed away almost 10 years ago. Rolt is not a very common name as I have never met anyone who was not related to me with the last name Rolt.

One of my husbands relatives was Samuel Rolt. He was born in Berkshire England and transported to Australia for 7 years for stealing shoes. He arrived in Sydney 7th February 1836, aged 12 (!). He earned his Certificate of Freedom in 1842, married in Bathurst New South Wales and had 8 children. I have additional information about the family if you are interested
