JAGO family name

Just to let you know, my maiden name is JAGO and I come from Cornwall, England , so I was surprised to see Jago's in New Zealand! My dad's name is Ernest Roy Jago and he was born in the 1920's if you're interested.

The name "Jago" is the ancient Cornish for "king" and there were Jagos who were Princes of Wales until the 10th century. Most Jagos in England originally come from Cornwall or Devon. There are, of course, several in Ireland - mostly in the Cork area - and there are variant spellings (such as Jagoe - John Arthur Jagoe was Chaplain of the RAF and Bishop of Bermuda).

My branch has a tradition of naming first-born son "Patrick" but calling child by second name - e.g. Patrick Philip (known as Philip), Patrick Desmond (known as Desmond) and myself Patrick Michael (known as Michael). I can only trace this line back to Patrick Philip, my grandfather, who emigrated from Plymouth to Canada in 1890/1900. He was a Warrant Officer in the RCAF and lived the later part of his life in Winnipeg.

Hope this helps generally - can anyone help me with the "Patrick" branch?
