This England

This royal throne of kings, this scept`red isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of mars,
This other Eden,demi-paradise,
This fortress built by nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in a silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall.
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands;
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm,

This England

If only, if only.

LOL it's a nice piece of writing but we're probably better off now than we were in Shakespeare's time.

I wouldn't swap hot showers and indian restaurants for a return to times gone by

Voltaire, quote: "I wouldn't swap hot showers and indian restaurants for a return to times gone by"

I would!! Venison, or Roast Wild Boar with FRESH vegetables, and chicken that TASTED like chicken, so it would need to be drowned in Dopiaza sauce to make it edible like the slop we have to put up with today.
I'd forego hot showers for proper food (but I'd miss the football).

Hey, Shev,

We sure would miss the football, but we could always go down to the local square and watch a hanging or two.

LOL but presumably today's chickens are descended from the ones that were around then? And now we can make them into curry

I'm still sticking with today, thanks

the chicken in the UK today is from sick, anaemic and unhealthy creatures stuck together in the dark; so the meat is so tasteless you HAVE to eat it in a curry.
Similarly the Salmon, it is only pink because they pour a chemical dye into the tank to make the pale colourless flesh look like proper salmon.

Hey museum, there were much more painful ways of dying in the old days, like being hung-drawn-and quatered.

They really knew how to enjoy themselves, dont you think.

I suppose the knights battling it out would be entertaining as well.
Didn't some King or Queen ban football? No wonder the monarchy ended up in trouble. Daft thing to do - the Ottoman Empire banned football and collapsed within a few years.
Serves 'em right.

But of course they did, not like the modern times is it...when all there is modern warfare and bombing thrown in for good measure
