Why are so many Scottish churches circular?
So nobody can hide in the corners during the collection.

Did you hear about the Scotsman who married a girl born on February the 29th so he'd only have to buy her a birthday present every four years?

Scottish preacher to his congregation: "I don't mind you putting buttons in the collection plate, but please...provide your own buttons. Stop pulling them off the church cushions."

Now I know why in Scotland I noticed church cushions
with no buttons on. They also use them for the local
bingo, I must suggest. 'A button for your jackpot '.
Scottish variation of the English ' A penny for your
thought '.

Mr. England987, theres no need in trying to come across as a smug ****e. You wanted to know what Ireland has given the world musically? OK, heres a few;

The Thrills
Ash
Boomtown Rats
The Pogues
Chris DeBurgh
Divine Comedy
Enya
Rory Gallagher
Hothouse Flowers
Gary Moore
Van Morrison
Sinead O'Connor
Sultan's of Ping F.C
Therapy
Thin Lizzy
U2
The Cranberries

To name but a few...
I'm not including Westlife or Boyzone as they're an embarrasment. And the above list aren't necessarily to my taste but you asked what has come from Ireland.

Not much sense in talking to England987 about the merits of other nations and cultures. He evidently sees the rest of the world as a giant wet, steaming dungheap, and apparently his beloved Britannia at the top of it sneering down at the rest of us "scum".

Yeah, and it's a pity that he doesn't realise that the rest of the world see's his beloved britannia as an ass-licker to the world's only superpower.

Reckon anyone's told him that it's 2004 and not 1904?

Oddly enough, from reading some of his posts, he thinks the reverse- it's the USA that should and would be licking his beloved Brittania's arse.

See, he evidently thinks that it's the UK that is the world's only superpower. I would agree he's definitely still stuck in 1904... Must not get out much...

In every country there is something good and
something bad. I remember the massive abuse
my country received for just one person.
Now I see it's England's turn. I'm quite
disgusted by that policy of many against
one as usual. The list given by England 987
about the English contribution to music was
quite correct. And so was it the one from
Ireland given by Irish Bloke. In terms of
facts both England and Ireland ( two small
countries ) gave Great contribution to the
world of music. In my country we say ' One
doesn't have to be big to be Great '.
Without any allusion. Also the USA, Canada,
Australia gave Great contribution. And they
are also big countries. Simply, they're Great
not because they're big.

Lycka till.

Considering that you're an American, what do you know about other nations and cultures? You have no right to call anyone arrogant, because the US is the most arrogant nation on the planet. And I wasn't making fun of all nations and cultures. I was just making fun of the Scots. And why shouldn't I? If you search the Internet you will find whole websites created by Scots with the sole purpose of making a mockery of the English. So a few Scottish jokes from an Englishman on this website won't do anyone any harm. You even poked fun at the English yourself. And Americans must be so insecure about being American, because as soon as any of you hear that you have a grandad who was a quarter-Scottish you suddenly assume that you are Scottish. And if I'm so proud of "Britannia", why would I make fun of the Scots? Scotland is a part of Britain.

These are the world's most powerful countries in order-

US 2488
China 827
Israel 617
India 564
Russia 369
S Korea 289
N Korea 274
UK 259
Turkey 240
Pakistan 235
Germany 190
Taiwan 155
Japan 150
Indonesia 150
Egypt 149
France 147
Italy 102

The numbers given here are the total combat capability of the nation's armed forces except for their navies. Certain nations like Israel, Sweden and Switzerland have a rapid mobilization capability which achieves the combat value shown within three days of mobilization. Their normal, unmobilized, combat value is less than one third of the value shown. As explained elsewhere, combat value is modified by geographical, climate and political factors. The value given here is a combination of the quantity and quality of manpower, equipment and weapons. This raw combat value is then multiplied by the force multiplier to combat value shown in this column.

Compared to EVERY country in Europe, Britain is a superpower because, not including Russia, Britain is the most militarily powerful country in Europe. These are the most powerful countries in Europe. The militaries of france and Germany are puny compared to the British-

Because the Scots have a reputation of being stingy and selfish. Instead of spending money to buy a few buttons they steal them from seats instead.

Your beloved US DOES lick Britain's arse, because you know we have the best military in the world and you needed us to help you fight the Iraqis. The last time the US fought a war on its own without British help you lost! (Vietnam)

And the reason why Britain may be "licking America's arse" is because of a SCOT! Tony Blair is Scottish, so it is a Scot that it licking America's arse, not the English.

England987, your own arrogance is betrayed by the assumptions you make. As it happens, yes I am American, but I spent more than half my life out of the country. As a result, yes I know a great deal about other cultures. You automatically assume ALL Americans are arrogant. "Pot? This is the kettle. You're black."

And the one thing the world is bashing the US for, wielding the fist of its powerful military- is exactly the same thing you are doing.

UK is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. What I was referring to was England, not the UK.

Yes, some Scots may have some resentment toward the English, but Scots generally didn't fare well under English rule, as you may notice from just about EVERY history book ever written on the subject. Does it make sense to continue to pick on and make bad jokes about the people you have subjugated for centuries? There's a difference. I'd consider it pretty bad taste.

And with regard to my Scottish ancestry, my grandfather emigrated from Scotland to the US in 1940. Regardless, unfortunately in today's society, if your grandfather was 1/4 black, you'd quite likely still be called black today. If you have seen any of my other posts, at least I DO know who my ancestors are, in many cases going back 1000+ years. I am quite well aware that one's concepts of nationality and ethnicity may not be what they are cracked up to be.

I'm willing to wager that one of YOUR ancestors was NORMAN... or Saxon... or before the Normans, Dane or Norwegian... So jump up and down all you like, touting the might and glory of the English, because you aren't necessarily English, either... You just happen to live there.

So anyways, I guess the US military can pull out of Iraq now, that token force of Mighty Brits have it all in hand. Thank goodness for them, winning that war for us.

You are blind to your own delusions.
