I'm a Mexican living in Stockholm.
I've also lived for extended periods in the US,Spain, Canada and of course Mexico.

Humanity has not conceived a fairer, more equal, more prosperous post-industrial society than 1990's Sweden (You can extend that to Scandinavia). While far from a perfect world, racism is virtually non-existent. The level of play is even for anybody that is willing to make a sacrifice. Maybe the upper level positions are still out of reach due to prejudice and mild (and I mean mild) racist practices in private and public institutions. But the middle tier positions are out there for the taking.

Yes people may look down on immigrants but it's the immigrants fault for empowering the opinion of ignorant Swedes for free.
Any able bodied person, no matter the background should be able at one point in their life to shake off inferiority sentiments and disregard what the media or what ignorant people say about immigrants belonging in pizzerias, garbage trucks etc........It's not lack of funding, it's not negligence it's sheer common sense.

Swedes should be proud of the country they've created. No wonder it's the world's metaphore for a civilized society.

Well said AL-Martinez. I keep hearing about how these immigrants are so frowned upon, not just in Sweden but in many parts of the world. It really is up to the individual to set goals and boundaries for themselves and if they choose to let others put them down, then you'll never get anywhere in life! Sure there may be instances of prejudice and racial biase, but where in the world is there not? I think that for the most part people judge others for their actions; whether its the individual in question or the society at large. Instead of sitting on your asses complaining endlessly about the injustices of the world, why not make more of an effort to prove your dissenters wrong? Maybe then you will be more proud to be an "immigrant" and your host country will be more proud to have you stay..

Thumbs up

Amen Paka, that's my point. Yes there are racist everywhere, but minorities out there should really stop thinking in
"me against them" terms. I couldn't keep up any relationships with a lot of minorities in the US for example because I couldn't get in a conversation with any of them that did not include racism or prejudice in some form or another. You get tired of it.
They love taking the victim role, and complaining, just complaining. No action plan, no ideology....Just finger pointing.

They try to use pity to get friends, a job, a girlfriend/boyfriend......That's no way to live a life, even if you succeed landing a job, girlfriend etc.....Racism is growing again, and an effective way to contain it is by eliminating the arguments of hate.
These neo-nazi kids aren't reading those grandiose essays with their elegant writing style condemning racism, they see a black man with his boom box at top volume inside the bus, the gay coupl emaking out in public places, the latino gangs spraying graffiti......That behaviour has no justification, that behaviour is empty, it's not subversive, it's not revolutionary it doesn't offer nothing. It's not fair to target all minorities for the behaviour of some, granted. But things aren't going to change unless we shut up and get to work, get to shcool......

I don't think the world is any worse than it was say 40 years ago, where the wasn't anybody condemning blatant racist societies, we're getting closer to an integrated world. There's going to be painful experiences but we have to go through them, it's inevitable to learn the hard way, besides it's more fun

I have seen documentaries from schools in USA were the black kids and the white kids where seated totally separated in the cafeteria, very strange.

For the most part, quite accurate.

I earned a rather unsavory reputation as a young teenager for associating with "them"...Cubans, Mexicans, Black...(I can't abide by the African-American thing, unless you want me to always address myself as Irish/German-American, and I don't feel like typing that much )
I suspect that living in the south (though Florida is not really southern in attitude, it is again an immigrant issue) contributed to this behavior, it was not deemed acceptable to be good friends with someone who didn't act "white"...What I mean:
I had friends who lived in town, lower on the social scale, in bad neighborhoods, doing bad things. Shame on me.
The kids who lived in my own community, whose parents had money and greater education - well, they're one of "us" now.
That was not a problem.

Safety in numbers, applies to all races?

Not so bad in college, though...Everybody sat with everybody in the cafeteria, and no hang-ups about skin color, atleast in my circle. By then I didn't give two sh!ts about what anyone else thought anyway.

I think your attitude is the right one, not giving a sh** about people's background is the deal.
But really mean it.-

In the US I think everybody acts out according to a pre established role.-
For example.-
Because I'm Mexican people really expect me to look, act, talk....like a Mexican all the time.
I was attacked for liking Tom Waits & Pink Floyd, and not Ricky Martin or some other Latin star.
(I wouldn't be caught dead with a Ricky Martin CD, I did go to a concert once but that's because of the
girls

A Black friend of mine actually asked me as a favor to keep it a secret that we went golfing when in the company
of the mostly black crowd he hung out with.

And whites are exactly the same if you're a rocket scientists you are going to wear certain clothes, listen to certain music, hang out with certain people and nobody seems to think otherwise.

I went to University on an athletic scholarship, and these guys on the team all wore, and acted like jocks. I mean they would get a T-Shirt saying that they not only were athletes but that they were defensive oriented, or coverage guys (by wearing a Deion Sanders jersey) or hard hitting guys (by wearing a Ronnie Lott jersey). All of them imitated video.

And none of them approved of the crowd I hung out with, pretty much like you. Because non of them could think that I actually enjoyed the company of theater guys, or punk rockers or whatever......

By hte way that African - American, Japanese- American , Cuban - American thing is ridiculous. It's like Prince asking to be called "the artist" I can't see in what way does that make people respect each other more.

Here in Sweden I think you can find a lot of people that do see the individual first, in general people here have a very live and let live sort of attitude towards everything.

One thing that really infuriated me about certain minorities is when they get all sad and depressed because they aren't accepted by idiotic whites only groups. For example, if you have a Whites only country Club or something, why not get the media involved and condemn them and do something about it......But there are scores of people that actually fill out an application and then they feel sorry because they got rejected....Or in college they try to act out as the rock and roll CEO and try to join the Young Republicans or some sh** group like that. I really don't get it, that is really really stupid.

Anyway

Peace man, keep it together over in florida. Say hi to my groovy latino family over there

"Sossarna” supress ideas/meanings and true opinion, that do not fit them

"Sossarna” supress certain ideas/meanings and true opinion, that do not fit them !
a. If U do not agree with their ”ideals”, U R, or will probably be,
a target of their machinery of suppression.
Many of their ovn, doesn´t like, or is heavily displeased with
this unbeleably huge emigration rate, into OUR country, just like us.
These and all we other, R then called rasists, (by them, used
as a bad or immoral adjective) to, as I said, suppress, subdue
and crush this, deep existing, fundamental and true opinion.

Racism is not an issue about "race" in Sweden, it is more of a cultural dimension. I think people who think "our culture" is threatened by immigrants, are the racist - those are the ones that are a threat to any foreigner, more than a hand full of "hardcore" neo-nazis/rasists that are only pathetic and a dying breed.

We have a lot of (white if you want to call them that), well educated immigrants from the mid East and South America in Sweden that can't get a job because they are "different" or whatever. They are not threatened or called bad names, they are just no let into the community and unless they can really fight for semselves and take a lot of **** from ignorant Swedes to prove that they are "ok" (just as good as the Swede), they end up cleaning the floors at some office were they could have been the boss. That is the problem in our country.

And in most other European countries as well, I am afraid.

Wink racism?

Hellow

I am not sure what we called "racism" or "racist" here
regarding with people in general.
All country has different type, shape, tool, and ways
of organzining the racism method.
For me personaly, I dont agree with this system of
racism. People are the same in the eye of GOD
with or without racism.
