Firstly, I come from a country of multiculturalism. In some ways it has made us as a nation alot stronger and compassionate. However at the same time, our country has some intolarence as well. the main problem is a lack of wilingness for immigrants to fit into our society. There are certain ways in which we are brought up to respect others and when this seems to be lacking it creates frustration. I came from a city called Vancouver. vancouver since our last Expo in 1986; has drawn people worldwide to our city. I now live in Calgary. However, The population growth is greatly a problem related to our own foreign policies with respect to immigration. As a nation there are people that believe, before we open up the doors to others we should work on our own propblems here in Canada first. this is not to say we don't want people, it is only to say that in order to better serve the people here and any newcommers we should get a handle on certain issues that need addressing. Also the subsantial increase in immigrants has driven the cost of housing and other things up substantialy this has created problems. I personally think we as Canadians need to become more educated to various cultures as well. we have a wonderful tolerant counrty. However we also lost our identity in some ways.I personally love the various cultures and believe they enrich our lives. By the way I am third generation Swedish Canadian. Right now we are encountering a problem where foreigners no matter how educated they are, are having a problem finding jobs. One of the reasons I think is because, and rightfully so, jobs are given to people whom live in this city then the country first. It also depends on the job market of course. the other reason I believe is that is the quality of Education equivilant to ours and what about skills are they up to our standards. sweden has always been a very open and caring society, and I am proud of my heritage. I think as stated there is a real concern of losing there identity. I would be concerned too. In Canada Native Indians lost there Identity and it creates a lot of physicalogical and emotional problems in some form or another. This is who we are and we feel a sense of self. How many people come to Canada every year?

Now, over 26,000 people come to Sweden.
The year before we joined schengen it was around 15,000 i think...

1. Asylum
During 2001 23000 people wanted asylum in Sweden. According to Migrationsverket, the increase, about 7000 more than the year before, was due to the new Schengen regulations. Almost 10000 of the the person seekin asylum came from Europe. Most of the asylum seekers come from these countries:

Iraq (6206)
Jugoslavia (3102)
Bocnia-Hercegovina (2775)
Russia (840)
Iran (780)
El Salvador (618)
Afghanistan (593)

2. Residence permit

2001 55505 got residence permit. 6852 got it because of refugee status. 1089 came in on the so called "refugee-quote" (refugees presented by UNHCR). 24 556 got the residence permit because of relatives living in Sweden (out of those 4104 got where relatives to refugees in Sweden).
