Food for thought indeed
Hi Alex
Thanks for replying. I can't post for much longer today cos time for treatment. However, just one comment. Your reply suddenly reminds me of William Golding's Lord of the Flies. Hmmm. Explain later. |

The immigrant issue.
Yes Thule, I agree with what you were saying about the problem of getting to much of immigrants in your country.Especially when they don't seem to be interested to adapt themselves into swedish customs and way of life.About their religion my opinion is that immigrants should not provocate the native inhabitants with their religion, they should practisice it in modest way. In my country(Belgium),as in most other E.U. countries we have the same problem. I think the most problems come with non E.U. immigrants whom we don't seem to get along with ,because we have a so different background/culture,and vice versa. But my opinion is that countries should only take immigrants with the same (less or more) background/culture. In this case of Sweden, this country should- only take immigrants with germanic(is this a correct word?)background. This to prevent the situation as we now it today,(and probably much more severed in the future). I think it's a logical conclusion.A concrete example : I'm curious on the answer of my question: What would Swedish people think of(in my case)-Flemish(northern Belgium)- immigrants into Sweden? Best regards, Gotch. |

Gotcha Gotch!
"WE don't get along" ... Are you talking about "we" as in "us" - I do get along fine with people from other cultures, in fact I find it more interesting than tagging along with people that are just the same as me.
"Germanic culture", gee what is that? Do you mean that only countries of northern Europe are compatible? I think you are pretty confused my fellow. I consider the southern European cultures to be pretty exotic compared to the Swedish. The languages are not similar to mine, not the weather and not much in the every day life. Should they be considered "non-compatible" as well? Italians, Spanish, French... those in-compatible bastards? No, I bet you mean something else. The magical, almost theatrical thing thing happening when you cross the sea from let's say Greece to Turkey that suddenly defines a real change of culture. The trip across the sea from "Germanic" (ha!) Greece to "in-compatible" Turkey or something like that. The quasi definitions of what is common cultures are just plain silly. People get along if they have a genuine intrest of doing so, culture is definitely one things that complicates (but at the same time makes things more interesting!), but it is not the major barrier. By the way, Belgians are considered very exotic in Sweden. With your funny way of life with large families and the way Belgium immigrants try to drain every penny out of our social security system. The way you park your camels, the crazy taxi drivers and not to mention your funny way of dressing. If only you would have been Germanic, then we could've gotten along pretty well I think. ![]()
