(the following is a translation of a post written in Spanish by a member who called himself Dardo. I have attempted to translate it into English at the request of a few other members (and unfortunately, without his permission). Although I have done my best in an effort to retain the eloquence of the original post, this translation does not do the original the justice it deserves. In any event, I hope you will enjoy this beautiful message).

To all who would like to listen:

I have been granted the pleasure of directing myself to you, and through you to ourselves, in an effort to manifest my thoughts.

It has been thirty-two years that I have lived this life of which I have only lived a very small portion of time, and this limited amount of time that I am allowed to live in this world, has granted me the possibility of learning from history, from the destruction of man by man himself, from industrial revolutions, from other languages, from other races and customs; in all, from an infinity of events and experiences of being human.

It is really astonishing to me to witness that, despite all the catastrophes that have been witnessed throughout history, and all the wars that have been recorded, we have not yet contemplated sufficiently about the important things in life, about the value of life.

Personally, I believe that it is fine to defend a way of life, just as it is fine to attempt to better the future of the human race through science and technology, but when this science begins to be used in the interest of selfishness and wickedness, this same science and technology becomes immoral and harmful, and does not create a better future for humanity, but creates obstacles to destiny, destroying this most beautiful mystery that encompasses the existence of being human, the mystery called “life”.

It may seem foolish, and perhaps some of you who read it will deem it an infantile reflection, but all that aside, I would still like to share the following with you:

“Once upon a time a man and a woman crossed paths, and almost without knowing, they began to discover feelings and emotions. After some time they married, she wore white, and he wore black; and so, some time later, their first son arrived, and with him came a whole new world of feelings and emotions. Years passed and that child became a man, a young man, twenty-three years old. In a different part of the world, other men disputed territories, riches, and beliefs. Suddenly, this dispute became a struggle, and soon after, it became a war. That war murdered many from both sides, and among them was that boy, who was born of a man and a woman who crossed paths, and who almost without knowing began to discover feelings and emotions, except today those feelings would not be of happiness or of joy, today those feelings would be of profound sadness and emptiness.”

For those reasons I consider that wars rooted on the tragic events at the Twin Towers will be an example of fighting fire with fire.

It is not only those two conflicting opinions that live in this world, but also the lives of millions of other human beings who have nothing to do with this dispute.

I remember when I was ten years of age, and I began to read about the great wars of the world, my initial reflection was: “why don’t they just play a game of chess and may the best one win? Can they not see how many lives have been lost because of war?.”

A few days ago a little North-American girl wrote to her president (or at least that’s what the communications media decided to tell us), telling him that she offered that which was most precious to her, to go to war—her father.

My ensuing question will probably be that of many, of few, or of none, but in any event, it is my question:

Why violence? Why despotism? Why the excess of pride? Why war? Why murder? Why missiles? Why firearms? Why bombs? Why corruption? Why indecency? Why the absence of love? Why so many evil things? AND WHY NOT PEACE? WHY NOT LIFE? WHY NOT SINCERITY? WHY NOT REMEMBRANCE?

WHY THE IMMESURABLE SELFISHNESS OF NOT REALIZING THAT IT IS THE MAJORITY OF US WHO DO NOT WANT THESE THINGS TO EVER HAPPEN AGAIN?

With these words I only wanted to express a feeling, and through it, my most sincere intention of being able to express that because I live in this world, I feel responsible for not being able to do anything to change these situations, and at the same time, I feel helpless and frustrated knowing that those who rule the destiny of nations are also men and women, and that many of them are still far from feeling responsible and are incapable of saying “I am sorry with complete honesty.” I would like to express with all of my soul, my wish for wars to end, and that peace finally begins to reign, and that we start to believe in a better world; that you, him, her, they, and we destroy the flag of violence and replace it with a flag of cooperation, a flag that is sewn with the thread of tolerance, a flag that represents the colors of all children, men and women, a flag that has the distinct smell of LIFE, a flag that, in one of its corners, bares the inscription that says “TO BE HUMAN.”

Below is the original post by Dardo:
