South Azerbaijan is a region that is currently under the administration of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
It is historically the southern portion of today's Republic of Azerbaijan and has been kept by force under the administration of "Iran" from 1925-1946 and from 1946 until the present. During the century that passed, the people of South Azerbaijan attempted to gain independence and autonomy 4 times: once in 1906, once in 1920 when they became independent, once in 1945 when they once again became independent, and once in 1980 after the Persian Islamic revolution of Iran.

In 1946, 1 year after South Azerbaijan had gained independence from Iran, the Persians attacked and killed more than 80,000 Azerbaijanis.

The Azerbaijanis (Azerbaijani Turks) are a nation that number about 28 million in South Azerbaijan and across Iran, yet they do not have basic rights as a nation. Their languag is banned, their culture is being assimilated, their history has been rewritten by Persian chauvinists and they are living without any national rights and respects.

Last year in 2002, more than 1.2 million Azerbaijanis showed up for the annual protest at "Babek Qalasi" in South Azerbaijan. Every year, hundreds of thousands show up at this castle to protest against Persian chauvinisim and chant for independence and their rights.

South Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijani Turks are ready for independence...the UN, European Union, the United States and human rights groups and other organizations are all aware of the problem of South Azerbaijan and are acting on it.

Members of Persian political parties and Persian chauvinist ideology try to spread propaganda against Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijanis. On the internet, many people from these groups state that Azerbaijanis like Iran and so do other ethnic groups such as Kurds, Balochis, Turkmens and Arabs who along with the Azerbaijani Turks make up close to 65% of Iran's population (Persians are a minority) They try to convince others that Iran, a nation which has had so much ethnic conflict in the past and is ready to split up into different countries right now, is a "peaceful" country that is home to different peoples.

The Azerbaijani Turks, Kurds, Balochis, Arabs and Turkmens have a right to self-determination and will most likely secede from Iran.

STOP PERSIAN CHAUVINISIM AND ETHNIC GENOCIDE IN IRAN

Southern Azerbaijan???

There is no SOUTH AZERBAIJAN. Azerbaijan is one region that has for almost all of recorded history (until just over a century ago) been a province of Iran. In late 19th centry, thru an agreement between Czarist Russia and Iran, part of NORTHern AZERBAIJAN was separated and incorporated into Russia.

Azeris, along with Persians, Kurds, Lors, Ghashghaie's, Bakhtiaris, Baluchi's and Arabs have always been an integral part of the Great Nation of IRAN. It is time to rejoin NORTH AZERBAIJAN to its historical homeland of Iran and put a stop to idiots like you who try to invent a history that does not exist.

Long live Iran and long live the patriotic people of Iranian Azerbaijan.

Signed: An Iranian Azeri

Right another "Iranian Azeri"

More like another Persian nazi.

There was no Iran until 1935. Before that the empire which was ruled by the Qajars was called "Mamalek i Mahruse" or "Protected kingdoms" and it was ruled by Turks for 1,000 years (Ghaznavids, Seljuks, Ilkhanids, Aq Qoyonlu, Qara Qoyonlu, Safavi, Afshar, Qajar) and before that by the Arab caliphate. There is no "greater Iran" when your country was established in 1935, you Persian biggot lol

Russians came and seperated Azerbaijan in 1813 and 1828 in two treaties, before that Azerbaijan was an independent kingdom. Azerbaijan and the Turks of Azerbaijan existed before Persians or "Iran" and Russians and "Soviet Union" and they will exist afterwards.

The words "Iran" and "Iranian" became official after 1935 when Persian chauvinists tried to establish a country based on fake history and fake nationalism to assimilate all the non-Persians. Throughout history, the land of Persia has been the central part of present-day Iran and that is your homeland. You are 36% of the country of Iran.

So stop your pan-Persian garbage.

For those interested in the history of the 2 Azerbaijans, read the 2002 book: Borders and Brethren by American authoer Brenda Shaffer.

Yashasin Azerbaycan & Azerbaycan Turkleri

Long live Azerbaijan & the Azerbaijani Turks

Iran viran olacak.
