With a little luck here in Canada, pot & hash will be decriminalized by the time “Dave” comes to Toronto at the Molson Amphetheatre on September 3rd, 2003. In 2001, I saw Dave Matthews Band at this outdoor venue and I knew at that time that pot would be decriminalized in Canada within 3 to 5 years. Since then, I have used Birthday wishes & falling stars and the odd wishing well, to wish for decriminalization by the time Dave plays outdoors in Canada.

The irony to the outdoor venue for me, was that in Toronto, there are smoking by-laws and you can’t smoke indoors. I know that I can smoke a “J” at any & every concert I go to. That’s not the point… it’s the principal and the fact that now I won’t be a criminal in my own country for lighting up a rocket or two in a responsible manner. There will be no need to look over my shoulder.

Looks like pot will be decriminalized for possession of less than a “Z”! It will be like a speeding ticket for flying to HIGH, only, you don’t lose points and your insurance doesn’t go up. This will be a new freedom for me! Another “barrier” of sorts to fall. I hope you will share in my sheer delight that people in Canada will not face the prospect of jail time or a criminal record for the sake of a couple of joints.

Things are moving quicker than I ever thought possible…
The Minister of Justice announced that he could have the bill passed that would decriminalize pot & hash within the first four months of 2003.

The Surgeon General’s report on Decriminalization was a catalyst for the movement through parliament. They found that it was more dangerous to Canadians to have it as an illegal substance. The average pot smoker would have to go to some places where they sold harder drugs to purchase pot or they could get hit over the head & robbed in some back ally.

Police Chiefs of Canada say decriminalize pot & hash. http://www.cfdp.ca/natpost.htm

The Senate recommends legalizing pot & hash. “Pot is less harmful than alcohol.”
http://www.medicalmarihuana.ca/legalize.html

In its final report, released on Wednesday, the Special Committee on Illegal Drugs says the government should make smoking pot legal, and should wipe clean the records of anyone convicted of possession. http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2002/09/04/pot_senate020904

Dave concerts are special enough! But, for me to enjoy a joint legally and see Dave?
Well, I tried my best but mere words won’t be good enough to describe the feeling. That’s where DMB comes into the picture!
Wish me luck.

hi Qwiz;

as a Canadian-I share your viewpoint. I too think Pot should be decriminalized, we simply don't have enough jail cells to fit all reefer smokers into...

However, I sure hope the US doesn't pull a fast one on us and stop this from happening. You never know what they might threaten us with in order to ensure pot isn't decriminalized. It's been an issue with the US government before, perhaps this time around, our government will stand up for what's right and not bow down to the bully.

regards.

Post Canadian pot Bill

Possession of 15 grams or less of marijuana:
a fine of $150 for an adult, $100 for a young
person.

Possession of one gram or less of cannabis resin:
a fine of $300 for an adult and $200 for young
people.

Possession of 15 grams or less of marijuana or one
gram or less of cannabis resin where aggravating
factors exist: a fine of $400 for an adult and $250
for a youth. Aggravating factors include driving a
car or being on school property.

Possession of between 15 grams and 30 grams of marijuana:
A police officer would decide if the person should
receive a ticket or issue a summons for a summary
conviction. The ticket fine would be $300 for an adult
and $200 for a youth. The summary conviction penalty
would be up to six months imprisonment and/or up to
a $1,000 fine.

Here is what is going on in Canada today.

I like the approach the Health Minister is taking with
the issue. This is a Health issue and it is nice to see
the 265 million to go to education. This is a good
first step and I am proud of my Government for taking
this first step. I hope in the future that this will
help ease some of the laws in the US. Some progressive
States like New York, who have had less restrictive
marijuana laws than Canada, no doubt helped us with the
pressure Ottawa had from Washington. This victory,
though small, will look smaller when you look at it
on paper. The victory is in the education Canadians
will get about all the facts. The victory is in the
way Canadians will be able to have a free & open debate
on the health issues of the drug. People who need help
will be able to get it without fear of having to deal
with the Justice System. Looks like the Fall Session
before they Vote on the Bill. Are we there yet?

I am happy that we took this step and we have
many more to go.

What does the future hold?
It will be nice to be able to go to a pot café in
any town or see Grow Your Own pot plant like the
places where you can go and brew your own beer.

Will we have new traditions? Hemp Festival, Potfest?
Or like we have for Christmas trees. Cut your own!
You go out in the fall after the first frost, walk
through miles of pot plants. 8-foot plants here, lots
of 6 & 7-foot plants, 9-foot ones are all gone. They
give you a hacksaw and that piece of rope to slip
around the trunk so you can drag back to car. The guys
will put it through that big cone and slip the tightly
packaged bush into the tight mesh stocking. Dont want
to lose 1 bud. Then you strap it down on the roof of
the car and drive home with it. Everyone looking at you
as you drive. Hey? Can we get our tree today?

Do we need to put people in jail for this?

I agree there are far too many ppl. who suffer with pain that could smoke it and have instant relief.
