My impression is that you seem to think that English is a first language in Belgium, if you compare to Australia; it is not. People in Flanders speak mostly a little English but it is still a third or fourth language. In Wallony, most only speak (Belgian) French. Except in touristic cities, maybe.

Ribke, i am shure that, at least in Flanders, English is more widely spoken, then French, so i'd put my money on English being the second language.
Most definatly with the young people.

The younger generation's grew/grow up with 80% english TV shows and Movies, all subtitled instead of dubed, and then i didn't mention internet yet.
I'm 22 myself, and i personally do not know anyone around my age and younger who doesn't understand English.
