I was just wondering if there were different types of maori, and if there are, is there a common language, or one most well known. I would love to learn some maori - so any information would be appreciated. thanx ![]() ka kite! |

Kia ora lady,
Well it all depends on what you mean by different maori. Maori from different tribes?, yes.. is the language different?, well, not exactly, the ways may differ from tribe to tribe, but the language is pretty much the same. Let me explain, to know and judging from what little information I am going by, that you are maori?? well if so, my advise is to first find out where you come from and your lineage, then begin from there. Find out your ancestry and go on from there. You will be less confused when trying to figure out what you want to learn. If you are not of maori descent, then I suggest getting books on the history of the maori, moving on to how and what we stand for. If you search through the internet, there are many free sites in fact, that will teach you the language. As soon as I get the exact site, I will give it to you. Well I hope this begins to help you. I am from Te Whanau-A-Apanu and Mataatua.
Mataatua is a tribal canoe. It is a part of our tribe but its the name of my canoe of my tribe. My Marae is in Whitianga, East Coast of the Bay of Plenty. |

thanks Letisia,
No, I am not maori but I am a new zealander though I have been living in england for a while but plan to go back soon. There are only a few in my family that are kiwis so I wanted to learn a bit about maori before I went back. It would be really helpful if you could tell me about any sites or information that you know. ![]() ashley |

I too am interested in the Maoris. My Great Grandfather was a Maori. He migrated to North East England and married a local woman in 1915. All of his children were born there from 1918 - 1927.
The stigma attached to non-white peoples in 1920s England was such that my Grandfather never accepted or talked of his Maori background at all. Any information or suggestions would be welcome. |
