My Great Grandfather was born in around 1892 in New Zealand. He was a Maori and his first name was Pine. He moved to England and settled in County Durham & Northumberland. He married my Great Grandmother in the December of 1915 and as far as I can tell remained in the UK from that point.
The social stigma of a mixed race background in the UK in the period prior to 1939 was such that my Grandfather never accepted or admitted his background. So much so that he moved to Scotland (where I was born). Therefore I only know snatches of information. Essentially I would be grateful if anyone could confirm what official or other records would record my Great Grandfather's birth. I have read that adoption was common in this period amongst Maoris. Is this true? Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks. |

try ancestory.com or try using "whakapapa" it means geneology in Maori and "shiplog" or "passenger list" when searching. There are sites out there that can help
try the first one below and apply for a birth certificate from internal affairs NZ, if u can find his last name then its half the battle done. using your last name as your first name was common by Maori, and also changing of names was even more common this was done to avoid having your land stolen by the crown, note also that his ship may have stoped off in Australia due to the long voyage so search there aswell, and yes adoption was common, mostly Maori families took in abandoned Pakeha kids but this didnt go down well with most Pakeha so adoption laws were made to stop this. Good luck!!!!! noho ora mai http://www.bdm.govt.nz/diawebsite.ns...x?OpenDocument http://tapuhi.natlib.govt.nz/ http://istg.rootsweb.com/ |
