The concept of a "band" is dying here becuase they are not as easily signed to record labels as solo women like Britney Spears or "boy bands" like the Back St. Boys. The good rock music here is played on certain radio stations and you can search for it online. I do have some favorite groups that are American. Most of them are older groups or their songs are old. That's all. If I want to find good music now days most of it comes from outside of the US (not all but most).

In a lot of ways, I feel like you do. There has been an incredible amount of great music coming out of the U.S. throughout its history, and that music has shaped music all over the world, but most of the popular stuff being created today is crap. Like you said, the good music is not at the forefront of society.

Meredith, as far as musical construction goes, if you want to listen to a band that really put a lot of musical theory into their music, listen to RUSH (who started in the 70's). Most of the fans of this band are either older or drummers. RUSH's drummer Neil Peart is one of THE best set drummers (not the best obviously since there's always someone better than who you think) in the history of rock. To me the music is awesome because of their innovativeness in theory. They don't play in "common man's time" all of the time and the rhythm of the songs is origional for the time it was made. Geddy Lee (lead singer and bass) wrote some really awesome lyrics as well touching on social issues rather than lyrics of love and passion. His messages were for everyone, not just teens or to lure women in. Anyway, there is some great North American music floating around but generally it's either older or it influences not so popular music here.

Ok, getting back to the topic of this thread in Swedish music..... What are people's opinions of Eskobar? Just curious

Toodles ya'll!

Just wanted to say, Jamie, that I am also a longtime fan of Rush, especially their stuff from the 70's/early 80's. They are very musically talented. I think that all three members are excellent musicians, and the lyrics are very good! I think they are underappreciated, too. Take care!

I love Peps Persson, but Looptroop and Timbukto!? I wouldn´t call that reggae. I draw the line at Governor Andy.

The sounds are great.
I really like "living in America"

If you like more heavy stuff listen to Hammerfall.

Helan gar is a song you sing when you drink(snapsvisa)
I should say the most famous in Sweden, but there are millions of others.

I'm not that great at translation, but I'll try to give you the meaning of the song

Helan gar(Helan går)
The whole goes
and the half follows
he who won't take the whole
can't have the half
the whole goes! (here you drink what you have)
sing "hoppfallerallan lej"

**Hoppfallerallan lej**
I don't realy know what this come from, it just sound good.
But I can give you what it nearly means.
Hopp = Jump
faller = falls
alla = everyone
leja = hire, employ
Hoppfallerallan lej = Jumpfallseveryone hire
As you see this doesn't make much sense

Helan går
och halvan följer också med
den som inte helan tar
inte heller halvan får
helan går
sjung hoppfallerallan lej
Hej!

I just found other versions...
here they come.

Helan går, sjung hopp fallerallan lallan lej
Helan går, sjung hopp fallerallan lej
Och den som inte helan tar,
han heller inte halvan får
Hela går!
Sjung hopp fallerallan lallan lej!

The whole goes, sing "hopp fallerallan lallan lej"
The whole goes, sing "hopp fallerallan lej"
And he who doesn't take the whole,
he can't have the half
The whole goes! (drink)
Sing "hopp fallerallan lallan lej!"

~This is a little more unusual version~

Helan går
och Halvan åker radiobil
den som inte Helan tar
den heller inte Halvan får
Helan går......
(Helan tages)
Sjung hopp faderallan lej.

Radiobil = radiocar? don't know the english word for this
its a car that you drive at the amusement park. cars with a antenna.

The whole goes
and the Half rides a "radiobil*"
he who won't take the whole
he can't have the half
The whole goes... (drink)
Sing "Sjung hopp faderallan lej"

The whole and the Half
can also refer to names:
herr Helan = mr Whole
herr Halvan = mr Half

This isn't a correct translation so if someone can correct me and translate it better please do so.

Talking That translation might be used against us...

OH great Rex! If not done before, now would be the perfect time for all foreigners to decalare Sweden as home of the Morons.

Old Swedish saying, "Snapsvisor skola aldrig översättas från svenska till språk av utrikisk härkomst".

"Old Swedish saying, "Snapsvisor skola aldrig översättas från svenska till språk av utrikisk härkomst"."

what does that mean??

Oh - I have to say this! I am HUGE FAN of Swedish music, but it's not what you think. It's not folk. It's heavy and beautiful. If you like the sound of big guitars and interesting timings the ONLY PLACE to look for music is Sweden. 3 of my all time favourite bands come out of Sweden. They are:

Meshuggah
Entombed
The Haunted

Please people, stay away from Hammerfall because that's just...terrible. The three I mentioned above are worth their combined weight in gold and wins your country so much respect you've no idea.

*chuckles*
It means: "Schnaps-songs shall never be translated from swedish to languages of a foreign origin"

Hmmmm...bosse i'd agree that Norway is where the smart people live.

But what's going on? Has Sweden missed Norwegian occupation so much that you've decided to surrender when we weren't even attacking you?
First you admit to liking Norwegian women, then you smooch Thule and he oddly lets you, and now you've finally proclaimed what we Norwegians knew all along-that Sweden is the home of morons.

The word Schnaps comes from german, Snaps in swedish, but the songs are Swedish. They're just swedish drinking-songs, or rather snaps-songs
The word has existed in Swedish since the 18'th century, so it's not really a new thing.
