Heja Everyone,

I am a third generation Swedish Canadian. Tell me is there any goog traditional Swedish Folk music and any good artists out there. I am not looking towards anything heavy medal or hard rock.

Surely everyone loves ABBA, right.......lol

Canada:

You could try 'Nordman' which is a modern style of folkmusic. And just some friendly advice: If a swede ever offers you to listen to something called 'dansbands musik' run! Run as fast as you can and never look back.

Thulin, I'm not in Sweden, but Kent is supposed to be the most popular rockband there now. I think they're brilliant. It seems odd to me, though, that they're so popular in Sweden, but never became even noticed in America or the UK, and also it also seems odd to me that here in America, it's all the sh*t bands that become popular, whereas the brilliant bands go unnoticed! Good for Sweden teens for recognizing brilliance when they see it. Anyhow, I HIGHLY recommend Kent. All of their albums and songs. Here is their official website: http://www.kent.nu
Under the Musiken heading, you can find the Diskografi (click to see the various albums), Texter for lyrics, and etc. You can also click on artiklar for articles, bilder for pictures, (all under the heading "Fansen").

Hey everyone! My name is Jamie and I'm from the US. I am new to this board but my reasons for getting on here and posting have loads to do in addressing what Terminal said in the post above. In the past few years since I entered university/college music has gone WAY downhill here in the US. There are a lot of international students here I've gotten to know and even one of my best friends is from Sweden. I asked many what music they like from their countries and I must say it's all been awesome! Ok, so I only know English and I don't understand the lyrics of the music I listen to now, but that's ok with me since it's the music I am listening for. Anyway, I realized how horrid our music was here and so now my tastes in music have gone far beyond the boarders of the country I call home. Any new music I can get my hands on is much appreciated because music is a HUGE part of my life. So, I don't put up much with what's popular here. I haven't listened to the radio in a LONG time. I don't watch much MTV or VH1 either. I wish they'd broad cast Euro MTV here in the US, that'd be awesome! Anyway....

One of the huge things here in the US (it seems) is the cometitiveness of sexuality. It dominates the culture (if you call the lifestyle here a culture, it all depends on your interpretation of the word... I leave room for flexability of your interpretation). So, rock music isn't so popular at parties or clubs anymore which lets face it, that's where "popular music" is most experiecned. Rock music is appreciated in small doses by people who know loads about it or are musicians themselves. So, for a general population, sexually driven music will be popular because it's easier to ummmm "dance" to when you're at a party or club. The more you can "get your freak on" as they say in some songs, the more popular you become in the crowd. Anymore with popular music that makes loads of dollars, it's not about the music, it's about putting your body out there. Music is dominated by sex or what's assumingly "cool" for the moment. Here at my university's music department we have some amazing students training to be in professional vocal ensembles and I knew one girl who went to audition for the "American Idol" show and they turned her down after two auditions because her voice was "too trained" and she didn't have a "charismatic appearance." So, what does that tell you?

I just wanted to post and see what others have experienced or want to add onto what I said. The disclaimer on this post is that I speak from my experiences only. I am not saying this is how everything is everywhere in this country or that I am "correct" in what I say. Some of you may think I'm wrong which is totally cool. I just speak the words of what I know. Anyway, I hope I can be accepted into your all's community of music fans here because I enjoy conversing with those who are just as crazy about music as I am. I also have to say, Sweden has some of the best music on the planet! So far of what I've heard it's all good! Thanks for reading this and I hope to get to know more of you. Cheers for good music! Toodles everyone!

~Jamie

Try Bo Kaspers Orkester, "Ingenting alls" is my favourite from them. Their music has a strong taste of Jazz and soul.

Also try Peter Jöback. My favourite from him are "Hon ser inte mig" och "Guldet blev till sand".

Ainbusk Singers is good too.

And if you like the style of ABBA´s music, you can go to Kazaa and search for "Benny Andersson". He has written a lot of music in that style.

Bo Kasper is good, somewhat of a Swedish version of Dave Mathews'...

If you are into (classic) rock like Hendrix, I think you would find Sky High (Claes Yngström) really interesting. Claes is one of the best Hendrix inspired blues guitarists around.

Meredith, I'm not saying all American music is bad. I was just replying to what Terminal said. I do like some of the rock we have here in the US. You just habe to dig down for it. The concept of a "band" is dying here becuase they are not as easily signed to record labels as solo women like Britney Spears or "boy bands" like the Back St. Boys. The good rock music here is played on certain radio stations and you can search for it online. I do have some favorite groups that are American. Most of them are older groups or their songs are old. That's all. If I want to find good music now days most of it comes from outside of the US (not all but most).

Toodles ya'll!
~Jamie
