As I remember, during the Spanish conquest of Belgium, Holland was also under Spanish government and they called it 'The Seventeen Provinces'.

Oh ,Yes I have read that but do not remember it so well.I will try to find that information again..I was also thinking this Belgium was a wealthy kingdom..it seems a bad spot to be when the big countries are fighting..I guess you need big guns or fast talking diplomats.

Justo,

Flanders was never a nation. It was an earldom that became very powerful in the middle ages and became a region composed of city-states and earldoms.
It defied France. In 1302 the French King sent a powerful and well-equipped army to submit them but the citizens of Bruges exterminated the French.
An upside down Alamo.

Thumbs up Good work Belgians!

I liked that story Rikbe..I thought I remember Belgians had a pair of balls like real men back when men would risk their lives defending their homelands..todays men would just lay down and let foreign armies just walk in and take over and be found hideing behind the ladies skirts. If you have any more history like that I would love to hear it.

The oldest quotation of Belgium goes back till 56 BC.
http://users.pandora.be/j.smits_faes/belgicaromana.html

Julius Caesar had already problems with the Belgians. When he had achieved conquering Belgium, he went for Rome and left legions behind. One Belgian tribal chief became friends with the Roman chief of a legion and managed to take him outside the military camp. Then he took him prisoner and attacked and destroyed the legion. This was the sign for a general uprising in the region against the Romans. Caesar came back with an army and defeated the tribes. Only some tribes continued to fight in a guerilla war, but were finally defeated. The tribe that started the troubles was almost exterminated.

During 2000 years there have been uprisings against all occupants, French, Germans, Spanish, Hollanders…
