LOG CABIN REPUBLICANS OF CALIFORNIA STATEMENT
ON SACRAMENTO'S 'GIRLIE MEN'
Gay Republicans urge Legislature to focus on passing Budget

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Los Angeles, CA,

July 19, 2004,
Log Cabin Republicans of California Chairman Jeff Bissiri today urged legislators to refrain from frivolous name calling over the Governor's 'girlie man' comment and pass a state budget.

Since May, when Governor Schwarzenegger submitted a balanced budget for the legislature's consideration, no action has been taken towards the adoption of his or any other budget by the Legislature. On Saturday, Schwarzenegger criticized legislators for being pushovers to special interests, drawing upon Saturday Night Live's Hans and Franz sketch, calling some in Sacramento 'girlie men' for not being forthright with their constituents about their ties to special interests. State Senator Sheila Kuehl criticized the Governor's remarks as being offensive and homophobic.

"The Governor's use of the term 'girlie man' was not a slur aimed at the gay and lesbian community and Senator Kuehl knows that", Bissiri stated. "Where was her outrage when the Bustamante campaign referred to candidate Schwarzenegger as a 'sissy' for not agreeing to an endless series of debates" Bissiri added. "As tax paying Californians, members of Log Cabin Republicans are offended by some State Legislators' desire to distract us from their own negligence on the State Budget with frivolous accusations of homophobia. Log Cabin agrees with Governor Schwarzenegger that our elected representatives should focus on representing their constituent's best interests and make the hard choices necessary to restore fiscal order," Bissiri concluded.

Log Cabin California is the statewide umbrella organization of Log Cabin Republican chapters in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Orange County, Sacramento, Long Beach, San Diego, Silicon Valley and Palm Springs. Log Cabin California is part of Log Cabin Republicans, the nations largest organization of gay and lesbian Republicans.
