They have welfare states, yes, as does the UK. But both are social-democratic capitalist economies, and Germany has always had stronger foundations to its industry than the UK does. The idea that it's all a plot to get our loot, just doesn't have any foundation.
Actually particularly in terms of social protection and decent working conditions, we in the UK benefit from the EU. V
