I was just wondering if anyone has any information about Sami weaving? Im doing a project & need as much info as possible.I need things like pictures of Sami weaving, materials used, colours used, rough dates of the pic & info, uses for the weaving.
I have been told that the Sami make beautiful baskets so would love info on the baskets if possible.
Thanks.

I suppose you've already tried the sites that Bosse has mentioned in the other threads in this forum. Beside those I couldn't find anything that looked interesting.
Sorry and good luck!

Cool

Hi Kuniya,

A couple of suggestions for your project:
On several off-the-wall searches for information, I have had some good responses from people at libraries, museums, and universities.

In that respect,I found a few sites that might be of help to you:
http://www.uit.no/ssweb/indexen.htm University of Tromsř (Norway), Centre for Sámi Studies
http://www2.umu.se/samiska/ Umea University (Sweden) - Sami Studies
http://www.norskfolke.museum.no/samisk/samiskeng.html The Sami Department of Norsk Folkemuseum. The e-mail address of the museum curator and links to libraries that might be responsive to queries for information.

Did a quick web-search on Scandinavian textiles and learned that emneord=weaving, but I don't remember in which language!

Also, in searching Scandinavian textiles, found several books on Scandinavian weaving at http://www.coastside.net/msinfobooks/textxwv2.html
There is info on identification of dyes on Scandinavian textiles at http://www.cs.vassar.edu/~capriest/vikdyes.html
The ancient technique of naalbinding, or single-needle knitting, is described and a bibliography are at http://www.florilegium.org/files/FOO...iners-msg.text

Similarly, a search on Scandinavian basketry produced some interesting results but I ran out of time and did not copy any of the URLs.

Just searching on Sami led to dozens of links. Wondered if you might link up with someone in some sort of cultural organization such as: http://members.tripod.com/~SAMI_SIIDA/index-3.html Sami Siiddat of North America is a confederation of regional organizations with members who share the heritage of the Sami culture.

Good luck!
Tia Margarita
