Hi, I'm in Goteborg now.. I thought it would be very cold but it not so bad at all!
![]() My housemates and I are thinking of catching the beautiful sights of Aurora Borealias (did I spell it right?) soon. Gosh, have seen those pictures of northen lights.. they look great, and I'm sure the REAL thing is gonna be awesome. Wanted to ask for some advice here : Would it be wise to take a train, a bus or a flight up to Kiruna? Of course, as students, we wish to be as economical as we can. We're intending to go up north after 3quarter exams, which is about 10March. Is it still possible to catch the lights around this date (or is it over)? Hope someone can drop us a msg! Tack! Pauline |

You can see the Northern Lights anytime in winter when the skies are clear.
However, the best time to see them is October and April. I haven't seen any in months. But I suspect that they'll soon return and yes, it's great to see pictures of them, but it's nothing like seeing them IRL. Pictures just can't capture them as they dance across the skies. I love em and always look for them at night. Best time to see them is probably around 7-9pm and rarely after midnight. And remember that they don't really last very long.. Only a matter of minutes, but you can see in the sky that they are trying to come.. You'll usually see faint cloud like streaks in the sky before they appear, so keep looking for them! As far as the cold goes, just remember that it's been a rather mild winter this year. ![]() I don't know the train fare, but my husband and I just got tickets from Luleå to Malmö round trip for May for less than 4000SEK for both of us with SAS. (It was twice the price to fly into Copenhagen. ) |

Hej LaGirl!
Thanks for much for telling me about those lights.. You have no idea how much I really want to see them!! I'm suprised to learn they only last a short! Hopefully I will be able to catch them. I actually saw a streak of it (bluish greenish) in the sky near my house in Goteborg that day.. and yah, it was there for not long too.. it was exciting! Hope to see a lot of it in Kiruna!! Read that one can even hear some crackling sound or some sorts.. amazing. I thought of flying, but it works out to be >2000 SEK per person with SAS cos there are 4 legs of travel involved. (Goteborg - Stockholm - Kiruna - Stockholm - Goteborg). But I'm trying to check out the train site http://www.sj.se and intensely figuring out the Svenska One question : what is the name of the destination station in Kiruna if I take a train up north? Kiruna C
http://www.connex.se/sweden http://www.connex.info/sweden/epview...aget/traininfo I think you have to use Connex at some point this far north, but since I've never used the trains in Sweden, I can't guarantee it. |
