Try the culinary delights of Hawaii's cuisine
Modern Hawaiin cuisine is a fusion of many cuisines broutght to the Islands of Hawaii by imigrants. Imigrated food types are particularly from America, Filipino, Japa, Korea, Polynese and Portugeuse. Many dishes are also influenced by food sources from plants and animals imported for Hawaiian agricultural use from all over the world. Traditional Hawaiian dishes are generally rich in fish and meat products.
It is customary among Hawaiian people to celebrate occasions by having a great feast. Hawaii is dependant on the sea for much of the foods that are consumed here. In keeping with the standards of Japanese Cuisine, the Hwaiian's still use rice as their staple starch.
Traditional Hawaiin cuisine will include dishes such as, Loco Moco (white rice topped with a hamburger patty, a fried egg, and gravy), Kalua Pig (roast pig), SPAM Musubi (a piece of SPAM topped with a block of rice and wrapped with a piece of nori) and Portuguese sweet bread (A bread made with sugar and honey to produce a subtly sweet flavour. It is usually baked as a round-shaped loaf on heated stone without a loaf tray, it is usually eaten with meals and not as a dessert.).
The Hawaiian's often use sea cucumbers in their dishes. Sea cucmber are virtually flavourless but they are rich in gelatin, which has thickening quality. It is used in soups, stir-fries and certain braised dishes.
A popular drink in Hawaii is Kona coffee. Kona coffe is the market name for a variety of coffees cultivated on the slopes of Mount Hualalai in the Kona District in Hawaii. The Hawaiian's are also very fond of their punches. There are many variations but generally a Hawaiian punch will include a mixture of fresh fruit juices and a libiral amount of rum.
