Discover the culture in Hungary
The culture of Hungary is well established and varied. Most of what is known today came from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and can be found in cities such as Buda and Pest and the Great Plain that shares a border with the Ukraine. Hungarian culture focuses on folk traditions such as embroidery, pottery, decorated buildings and carvings. Rhapsodies, Roma music and folk music typically characterize Hungarian music styles.
Hungary is also well known for water sports. Events such as swimming, canoeing and water polo are popular despite the fact that there are no large bodies of water in the country. However, many Hungarians have excelled at water sports in the Olympics and other sporting events.
Hungarians are also very intelligent. Besides being the home of many great mathematicians over the years, they are also accredited with the invention of such groundbreaking items as the electronic railway engine, the ballpoint pen, the BASIC programming language and the hydrogen bomb.
Hungarian culture is also quite developed in other spheres of life such as cuisine and literature. In 2002, Imre Kertész won the Nobel Prize in Literature and he is held in high regard for his literary work. Hungarian cuisine is varied and generally quite meaty. They tend to include either pork or beef in their dishes and flavor them with paprika. Beef goulash and pörkölt are popular meat-flavored dishes. Hungary also produces its own wines which go down well with their meals.
