When to Go
Anytime is a good time to go to Hungary but temperatures are most pleasant from May to September. Because Budapest is so huge, it never feels crowded, not even in high season, so the best is, is to plan your vacation to coincide with some of the summer festivals. Fall and spring, although a little colder can also be very nice. You should really try to avoid visiting Hungary in winter, as it gets very bitterly cold.
Weather
Hungary has a temperate climate with very cold, cloudy and humid winters and warm summers. It is recommended to pack cool, comfortable, clothes if you are planning to visit Hungary in the summer months and heavy warm clothes if you are planning to visit in the winter months.
Health and Safety
Your health shouldn't be a issue, while visiting Hungary, however there have been a few cases of travelers diarrhoea in the past. Hungary's tap water is clean and balanced and is generally safe to drink. Hungary doesn't have a high crime rate at all, although you should still be watchful for petty theft and pickpockets. Avoid wearing flashy clothes and jewelry to avoid unwanted attention and never walk alone in deserted alleyways.
Visas and Passports
Citizens of Canada, South Africa, Ireland, the US and the UK can visit without a visa for stays of up to 90 days, however they do need a passport that does not expire within six months of their journey's end. New Zealanders and Australians must obtain a 90-day tourist visa from a Hungarian embassy or consulate.
Money and Currency
The forint (Ft) is the official currency of Hungary, they are divided into 100 fillers. Hungary has a number of currency changing machines that offer very favourable exchange rates, they are however just a little bit slow. All major credit cards, such as, MasterCard, Diners Club, and Visa are accepted at all big hotels and restaurants. Rounding up a bill as a tip is standard etiquette. Foreigners are supposed to tip 15%.
