Getting around with Hungary transport
By Air
There are several major airlines that serve the Budapest international airport with flights daily. Hungary's national airline, Malev, has daily direct flights from New York and London.
By Train
There are numerous trains that pass through Budapest, they are usually very comfortable, reliable and cheap. International tickets should be booked in advance. Szemelyvonat trains are very slow, while Gyorsvonat trains cost the same but are twice as fast. Most large towns are accessible by the blue Expressz lines. The InterCity trains are the fastest and they are air-conditioned. A train that is marked with an "R", requires a seat reservation, if you fail to do so you can be fined with a 1000Ft. Eurail is valid in Hungary.
By Bus
There are bus services in Hungary, they are generally very comfortable, cheap and clean, but they tend to be a little crowded sometimes. These bus services link many towns that have rail connections only to Budapest. InterCity bus tickets are purchased on board, so you should be early to get a seat. In most larger cities, tickets for public transportation should be bought from newsstands and be punched on board, if you fail to do so you will have to face a fine.
By Ferry
There is a ferry service that goes from Budapest to Vienna, there schedules are frequent and reliable.
By Car
There are numerous car rental companies available in Hungary. Most airports have at least one major international chain car rental company. Hungary's roads are well maintained and it is fairly easy to drive in Hungary, although traffic can be a little heavy during peak traffic times.
By Taxi
Hungary's taxi cabs are marked with yellow taxi signs and they are required by law to have yellow number plates. They are fairly expensive seeing that your fare will consist of three parts. A basic fee which does not depend on the distance you travel, a kilometer fare based on the actual distance you traveled and a waiting tariff which is used if the taxi had to stop or advanced to slower than 15km/h.
