Explore the vast beauty that Interlaken has to offer

A municipality in the Canton of Bern, Interlaken is a well known tourist destination due to its location close the Swiss Alps. Wedged between Lake Brienz on the east and Lake Thun on the west, the town was named after its geographical position between these two bodies of water. However this has not always been the case and the name 'Interlaken' only replaced the old name Aarmühle in 1891.

The beauty of the town is accentuated by the pristine waters of the Aare river which flow through the town. In days gone by the inhabitants of Interlaken made their living mostly by making textiles while a small minority were involved in the art of watchmaking. The Augustinian canons convent was of quite a lot of importance and drew quite a few visitors until 1528 when it closed its doors. Today the majority of Interlaken's residents make their living from tourism and have been doing so for quite some time. Interlaken is one of the countries oldest tourist resorts and it remains very popular. The town is also the starting point of the Jungfrau Marathon which takes place in the surrounding areas each year.

If you are considering to Switzerland for a restful and scenic holiday, Interlaken is the destination of choice. Framed by the magnificent Jungfrau mountain which rises 4158 meters into the sky, the town is not only scenic but serves as a practical base from which to explore the surrounding areas. This is usually done by bus or train and there are two train stations which serve the town. Interlaken is connected to Spiez, Thun and Bern by train and you can also reach Thun by bus.
