Relax in the hotsprings of Beitou
The northernmost of Taipei's twelve districts is known as the Beitou District. Historically, the district is called Peitou and the name is sometimes still used today. It come from the Ketagalan word "Kipatauw" which, when loosely translated, means "witch". Beitou stands out from other districts quite literally. It is the most mountains and highest of all the districts in Taipei!
From around 1920, Beitou was known as a small village belonging to the Qixing District in the Taipei Prefecture. In 1941 it was upgraded to a town and, after the Second World War, it was renamed again as the Beitou urban township in the Taipei Country. The town of Beitou underwent further changes until 1968 when it was merged with nearby Shilin to form Taipei City. Today the city enjoys much prosperity and boasts the National Yang Ming University, the Taipei National University of Arts, the Kuang Wu Institute of Technology and the National Taipei College of Nursing.
One of the best things about its position high in the mountains is that the Beitou region enjoys a large number of hot springs and a proximity to nature.
