Los Angeles City has a system of four airports called Los Angeles World Airports, which are owned and cared for by the city. The airports are: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Ontario International Airport (ONT), Palmdale Regional Airport (PMD) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY). All four airports work together to cater for all passenger and cargo aviation services. High standards are set regarding customer service, security and safety in Los Angeles' airports.

Los Angeles International Airport handles large numbers of non-connecting flights. Flights to and from North America, South America, Europe, Oceania and Asia operate here. This Los Angeles Airport is located just 15 miles from downtown. Transport between the airport and city includes shuttle buses, The LAX FlyAway bus lines and taxicabs. LAX has 8 terminals used by various airlines. America West, US Airways and Southwest Airways operate from Terminal 1. Terminal 2 is used by Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic, KLM, Air New Zealand and more. Terminal 3 is for Alaska, Horizon, American and Midwest Express. American Airlines uses Terminal 4. Terminal 5 serves Aeromexico, Delta, American and several other airlines. Terminal 6 is for use by United Airlines and Continental. United Airlines is served by Terminal 7. Terminal 8 is for non-US airlines.

Ontario International Airport in Los Angeles is 35 miles outside of downtown. This medium sized airport offers full-service. Two terminals with 26 gates serve the ten passenger carriers that land here. The airport parking here is large enough for almost 14000 vehicles. Car rental companies are represented at the airport. Fourteen shops provide food and beverages.

Van Nuys Airport is one of the world's busiest general airports. Over 100 businesses are situated within the airport. Located at the airport is the Los Angeles Fire Department, City Helicopter Center, Los Angeles Unified School, District Aviation Mechanics School and California Civil Air Patrol.

Palmdale Regional Airport is situated in Antelope Valley. The modern terminal can take in some 300 000 passengers annually. Some 60 miles from downtown Los Angeles Palmdale Airport at present does not have scheduled airline flights.
